Learning from Planýrka: student projects explore urban wilderness in the centre of Brno
3 November – 30 November | Centrum VUT Tržnice | guided tour:
13 November at 5.00 pm
From 3 to 30 November 2026, Centrum VUT Tržnice on Zelný
trh will host the exhibition ‘Learning from Planýrka’, showcasing work by
students of the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology
created in the Hlavička-Singer-Spalajković studio between 2024 and 2026. The
exhibition will offer a perspective on the Planýrka area of Brno through
contemporary approaches in architecture, urban planning, speculative design and
artistic research.
Planýrka is not merely a neglected area on the fringes of
the city’s interests. The students perceive it as a significant post-cultural
and multi-species urban landscape bearing an important historical and cultural
legacy of Brno. In their projects, they focus on the site’s potential for
environmentally and socially just urban development and explore its
transformations from various perspectives.
The exhibition will present a wide range of multimedia works
exploring themes such as wetlands near the city centre, the future of the
iconic stadium, possibilities for the adaptive reuse of existing architectural
structures, issues of the area’s inaccessibility, social segregation and the
site’s complex historical development. It is precisely this emphasis on
speculative design and artistic research that gives the presented works their
distinctive character and sets them apart from standard outputs of
architectural education.
The Hlavička-Singer-Spalajković Studio has been based at the
Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology, since 2024. It builds
on long-term research into Brno’s Planýrka neighbourhood, which members of the
studio’s leadership are developing as part of their doctoral studies and
through the 360+ lab research collective. The studio is characterised by its
emphasis on horizontal structure, an individual approach, collective
collaboration and experimental methods of research and design.
The exhibition is organised with the support of the Faculty
Development Project.
