Jan Kristek’s studio presented new perspectives on housing in Trnava

The international DEPOZIT 2026 conference, held in Trnava, addressed issues of housing affordability, forms of ownership and the role of architects in tackling the housing crisis. Students from FA BUT also took part in the event as part of a studio assignment focusing on contemporary forms of housing.

Jan Kristek gave a lecture at the festival entitled ‘Housing: Speculative Stories about Ownership’, in which he focused on the question of how to teach architecture in the midst of a housing crisis and how future architects can think critically about the current housing system without succumbing to a sense of powerlessness caused by the complexity of the problem. Using examples of student projects, he outlined ways of exploring new approaches and scenarios for future development.

The programme also included a student presentation entitled ‘What Can We Hope For? The Aspirations of the Up-and-Coming Generation of Architects in the Field of Housing’, which took the form of a communal brunch. The students presented projects currently in progress within the studio and discussed various forms of housing, ranging from traditional models of ownership to new hybrid and experimental approaches.

The works presented do not focus on tried-and-tested models or adopted strategies. They are based on a search for concrete answers to the question of how to live today, and explore the entire spectrum of topics, from site selection and financing options to the architectural design itself. In doing so, they emphasise personal strategies and new forms of coexistence that can respond to the changing conditions of contemporary society.

Participation in the event offered students the opportunity to present their works-in-progress to an international audience and to engage in debates on one of the most significant architectural and social issues of our time.

Further information about the event can be found on the DEPOZIT 2026 website.
