Models of Brno’s modern architecture will be on display at an exhibition in Poznań
The exhibition ‘Modernism – Does It Still Make Sense?’,
subtitled ‘Poznań and Brno Face to Face with Modernism’, will present models of
significant examples of Brno’s modernist architecture in Poznań, created by
students from the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology. The
exhibition forms part of the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the
partnership between the cities of Brno and Poznań.
What should a good city look like? What role can architecture play in shaping everyday life? And can space still be an instrument of change? Through the meeting of Brno and Poznań, the exhibition will open a discussion on the past, present and future of Central European cities, as well as on the significance of modernism for their further development.
Eleven models of Brno’s modernist architecture
FA BUT will present a collection of eleven models of landmarks of Brno’s
modernist architecture at the exhibition. Students have created models of
buildings of various scales and typologies, ranging from family homes and
blocks of flats to a school, a café and a hotel, as well as religious and exhibition
architecture.
The collection includes models of the Tugendhat Villa by
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Hus Congregation of the Czechoslovak Hussite
Church by Jan Víšek, the ERA café by Josef Kranz, the Avion Hotel by Bohuslav
Fuchs, the Vesna Vocational School for Women’s Professions by Bohuslav Fuchs
and Josef Polášek, the House for Two Young Men by Otto and Mořic Eisler, and
the Brno Crematorium by Ernst Wiesner.
The exhibition will also feature models of the G Trade and
Commerce Pavilion by Bohumír František Antonín Čermák, the Petrák couple’s
villa by Bohuslav Fuchs, the Convalaria apartment block with shops and a café,
and the tram waiting room on Obilní trh by Oskar Poříska.
Through these models, visitors will discover the diversity
of Brno’s modern architecture and the work of architects who significantly
shaped the appearance of interwar Brno. The exhibition will also provide an
opportunity to compare Brno’s functionalist architecture with distinctive
expressions of modernism in Poznań.
Accompanying panel discussions
The programme will include two panel discussions focusing on
the relationship between local architecture and the international language of
modernism, the formation of a new national identity, the city as a project of
modernity, the role of exhibitions and trade fairs, and the significance of new
technologies and materials.
The discussions will take place on Monday 5 October and
Friday 9 October, from 5.00 pm to 7.30 pm, at the WAWIZ building, J.
Rychlewskiego 2, Poznań.
