Around Hradec: a project by FA BUT breathes new life into an unused fountain
An unused fountain on Edvard Beneš Avenue in Hradec Králové was transformed during the Landscape Festival into a place for socialising, play and spatial exploration. The temporary architectural intervention ‘Okolo Hradce’ harnesses the potential of this abandoned public space and invites residents to sit, stroll and take part in neighbourhood activities. It will be open to visitors until 30 September 2026. During September, the project will also be presented at PechaKucha Night, the UpCycle Expo conference and the Benešovka kulturní neighbourhood festival.

The ‘Okolo Hradce’ project by the Krejčová & Doležel
studio revitalises an unused fountain on Edvard Beneš Avenue, also known as
Benešovka. The project’s name refers to a well-known folk song and highlights
the potential of this abandoned public space, which can become a microcosm of a
vibrant city and a venue for neighbourhood activities.
The intervention utilises the edge of the former fountain,
transforming it into a bench and a route for a short stroll. Four towers stand
at the corners of the water feature. Together, they form an interactive
structure resembling imaginary ramparts, introducing an element of play and
spatial exploration into the monotonous housing estate environment. The
intervention also includes a horizontal pier, inviting people to sit together
or hold a neighbourhood feast.

Materials for the installation were selected with regard to the principles of recycling and upcycling. The installation is on display in Hradec Králové for the duration of the Landscape Festival, from 4 June to 30 September 2026.
The ‘Okolo Hradce’ project, along with other student proposals focusing on Benešovka created in the Krejčová & Doležel studio, were presented in June at the ‘Hradecké vize’ exhibition on the site of the former central public abattoir in Hradec Králové.
