Workshop in Tokyo: Designing Homes for Urban Wildlife
In August 2025, Radek Toman, Vice-Dean for International Relations at the Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology, led a multi-day workshop entitled “Designing Homes for Urban Wildlife” as part of the Art and Design for Spatial Experience and Concentration in Environmental Design programs at the Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo.

Throughout the workshop, students conducted site-specific observations and analyses of the Suginami campus surroundings. Based on these insights, they designed and constructed small-scale structures to support often-overlooked forms of urban biodiversity—such as birdhouses and nesting sites for solitary bees.

The workshop aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the interplay between architecture, urban ecology, and approaches to urban education. It confirmed that spatial design does not address only human inhabitants of cities, but also the many other species that share urban environments with us.
