Kashitu School Exhibition
You've probably heard of building a school in Africa. A development organisation comes, builds a school and then the local people can start using it. But the reality is not so simple. Many such projects fail to be implemented in the life of the local community.
How can it be done differently? Can the locals build a quality and comfortable school themselves with only the help of someone more experienced?

Our project was born out of the needs of the local community right here in Zambia, in the rural area of Kashitu, and evolved from a long-term collaboration between a local and a Czech NGO, Friends of New Renato. It is based on the principle of unbaked bricks that fit together and allow for brickwork without mortar. This technology is based on the traditional way of building and therefore is not difficult for the locals to train. The unbaked bricks are strong and durable enough not to be fired, thanks to the cement stabilisation. This also saves the local forests, which are scarce in Zambia.
