The Memory of Place exhibition shows the beauty of the Opočno monastery through photographs and light installations
The exhibition MEMORY OF A PLACE is a collection of student works containing new forms of analysis of the memory of the abandoned monastery in Opočno. We draw the public into the atmosphere of this place by uncovering layers of time, engaging the senses, working with solid matter and elusive substances, and the play of light and shadows. The opening will take place today at the MINI Gallery at 16:00.
The monastery, a forbidden and protected place closed to the outside world, enclosed by a high stone wall with a small inner atrium and a large garden filling the space between the wall and the walls of the buildings. Today it is empty and deserted, but not ruined. The historic buildings rising to the sky with their institutional annexes have given the place a special look and feel. The apple orchard still bears fruit and the dilapidated greenhouse and low buildings give a clue as to how and where the religious life took place. The interiors, now deserted from the arduous and often joyless service to the needy and the ungovernable people excluded from society, have absorbed the stories of people who have been forgotten, but whose moments of joy and occasional epiphanies are suggested by some of the memories captured on the walls and hung from the ceiling. Is it possible to revive this place?
To give it back its colour, its touch? We would like you to see not only the dismal area and the old unsightly buildings. We wish you could see a hope, a utopia, beyond all thought. And maybe all we have to do is dim the lights, stifle our gaze and engage our other senses.
