The unique, heritage-protected building of the Piarist dormitory in Lipník nad Bečvou is decaying and has been waiting for many years to the rescue. At the same time, it is looking for new uses. In September, after a long time, he will finally see it. There will be a workshop of students from the Faculty of Architecture of the BUT in Brno, who will start the rescue process, check the real possibilities and come up with a document for the city that will outline what to do with the building next.
Architecture students will begin the process of restoring the Piarist dormitory in Lipník nad Bečvou
The monastery in Lipník nad Bečvou is one of the most endangered monuments in the Czech Republic. The baroque college and school of the Piarists was established on the site of the original house and hospital of the Unity of the Brethren with a choir from the 16th century. The order of Piarists left the building at the end of the 19th century. The buildings were used until the nineties of the 20th century. The situation threatening their existence was only brought about by the present time, when the entire building is empty and without use, which causes its gradual degradation.

"In the place The Piarist dormitory was originally built by the House of the Brethren Unity. In 1634, the Piarists came to the city at the instigation of Cardinal Dietrichštejn, who gradually rebuilt this house into its present form. During the first reconstruction in the years 1637 - 1641, 18 monastic cells and one dark cell were built. In 1673, a secondary school building was built, and in 1740-1741, it was expanded by another tract. The building housed a school, a novitiate, a library, an oratory, apartments for religious clerics and students," explains deputy mayor Ondřej Vlček.
For the time being, it is not possible to find a suitable use for the former Piarist college from the 17th century, or money for an expensive reconstruction. Due to the long-term non-use of most of the premises and the non-performance of routine maintenance, the building requires a total restoration. looking for a suitable use. That is why the city established cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Technology in Brno, and will thus obtain a verification of the possibilities directly from independent experts. In recent years, ideas have been floated to turn the former dormitory into a hotel, a home for the elderly or an accommodation complex, for example. Without a suitable project, it is impossible to get money to repair the area. That's why we're glad that this collaboration came about and we believe it will bring new energy and perspective." says Mayor Miloslav Přikryl.
Similar procedure it was also chosen by the city administration in nearby Prostějov, where a student workshop took place in autumn last year. The students developed conceptual proposals for the usability of the object of the Prostejov observatory. This impulse started the process of renovation of the building. The Olomouc region, based on the results of a
team of young experts, under the guidance of experienced lecturers, has launched an open architectural competition and will soon implement the reconstruction of the old observatory.

The town of Lipník nad Bečvou lies in the very heart of the Moravian Gate. Since 1989, Lipník nad Bečvou has been a municipal monument reserve. There are more than 100 listed buildings here. The city has retained its original street lines, historic buildings in the core of medieval origin and, on a large scale, very remarkable fortifications. It still bears all the signs of ancient settlements - a dominant square in the center, a star-shaped communication system and bypass roads. To a large extent, it has preserved its original historical urban layout. Near the city is also the medieval Helfštýn Castle, which is one of the largest castles in Central Europe and in 2021 won the main prize in the Czech Architecture Award competition, which is announced annually by the Czech Chamber of Architects. The Piarist college can thus build on a number of successful architectural projects in the area.
Besides charity, the mission of the Piarists was teaching young people in schools of all levels. The college in Lipník was of greatest importance as a place of novitiate, where candidates from all regions of Moravia, Silesia, Bohemia and from the Austrian and German countries were prepared for their work and future teaching profession by qualified pedagogues. In the years 1833-1834, Johann Gregor Mendel, the discoverer of genetic laws, stayed here as a pupil of the Piarist school.
"Lipník se thanks to the order of the Piarists, he became a witness to baroque generosity, but we have not been able to deal with it for a long time. Thanks to the students of the BUT Faculty of Architecture, let's find it again today!" underlines the workshop lecturer and an experienced Olomouc architect and pedagogue MgA. Ing. arch. Vojtěch Jemelka.
The workshop is held with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture as part of the celebration of 200 years since the birth of Gregor Johann Mendel.
