Prayer in the countryside: walk through the modern, unconventional Way of the Cross in Pelhřimovy
In the Czech-Polish border area, in the Osoblaž region, on the site of the defunct village of Pelhřimovy, students of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Technology in Brno created several distinctive wooden objects in the landscape. At the beginning of the summer holidays, the Workshop summer school took place there, during which they turned their designs into reality with their own hands.Martin Kuběna – PATH(photo by Richard Hodonický)< /div>

“The Sudetenland forgotten in time. In the middle of all this nothingness is a piece of the world that is kind of destroying them. Here you forget that maybe there is time. When you think of him, you wait for the church clock to strike, and then you argue for a while whether it struck half past one or three.” one of the participants of the workshop, Marie Křížková, begins her reflection. It describes the place where the traditional Workshop summer school took place in the period from June 26 to July 1, 2022, and together with 12 other students, she had the opportunity to materialize her architectural design with her own hands.

This year's theme of the summer school was Prayer in the Landscape. On the side of the civilizing movement, the students were given space in their proposals to reflect individual spirituality and life attitudes, which they subsequently transformed into a concrete realization. The objects in the landscape are an expression of the spirituality and spiritual values ??of the coming generation. They reflect the impact of current events in the world on society.
"Today's society deals with a number of global issues, from climate change, the coronavirus pandemic to war conflicts and their consequences. These topics affect each of us to varying degrees. Man naturally seeks hope and also silence or inner harmony in returning to nature or his inner faith," explains one of the lecturers of the workshop, architect Tomáš Madro. Together with him, Jan Mléčka and Barbora Pospíšilová formed the teaching team.

History has left a very strong mark on the place. Thinking about the border of the place where everyone was driven out as a direct result of the war has unfortunately become relevant again. A new landscape has emerged that covers all grievances in a cyclical rhythm of extinction and rebirth. A trip to a neighboring village that has been forgotten for over 70 years, along with the task for students to express their concept of sacred space with the help of boards, takes on an even more interesting dimension.

One theme. Thirteen students. One path and thirteen materialized thoughts on it. The defined old road, which has become overgrown with time, has become an imaginary way of the cross. All realizations were placed right here in a series of individual stops. During the design process, the students each worked separately, so they could put a piece of themselves into the design, intensively live their own unique experience. In the course of implementation, however, they came to the realization that they must cooperate during construction. This is how a unique, non-traditional Way of the Cross was created, which is innovative in its universality and abstractness.
“It is not the Stations of the Cross in the classic Catholic sense. Everyone can put whatever meaning they want into it. Catholics can easily go through the Way of the Cross after individual stops in the prayer procession, as they are used to. It mainly depends on the associations and feelings of each visitor, how they will be affected by the import route and the message of the architecture students on the given topic. They have created a rather unique cycle here, which reflects the spiritual perception of the landscape by the youngest emerging generation," commented Jan Mléčka, who was one of the workshop leaders, on the result of almost a week's work.

During an intensive five days of designing, spatial sketching 1:1 and building together, the students found refuge in the church of St. George from the end of the 13th century. It has been gradually repaired by volunteers for several years and various cultural events are held there.

Some came for the first time, others are returning here after a year. Last year, students symbolically revived the remains of the original buildings with stylized shelters. Visitors could therefore spend the night in several places in the countryside in the middle of a defunct village throughout the past year.

This year's resulting objects, symbolically connected to a contemporary fragment of the Stations of the Cross, can be viewed by visitors to Osoblažské Pelhřimov from the beginning of the holidays. The entire route was presented to the public during the opening on July 22, 2022. The objects will remain here for the whole of the following year, when you can also visit, discover and experience a spiritually attuned walk in the newly renewed landscape.

To create a boardwalk that invites spiritual meditation and students of the Faculty of Architecture of the BUT in Brno took part in the prayer in the landscape across the years, namely Ondřej Zavadil, David Boháč, Roman Bartoš, Jan Peřina, Sára Solmošiová, Marie Křížková, Jan Bílek, Ondřej Bradávka, Radovan Séleš, Veronika Pečeňová, Nina Pauliny, Martin Kuběna and Martin Voldán.
A brochure was created for the entire installation, where you can find author's texts not only about the objects themselves, but also about their creation, the design process and the course of the entire workshop. Before traveling to Pelhřimov, you can download it here, or print it out. It can be picked up at the church of St. Jiří, which is open during events, or by prior arrangement.
