Space of cyclical change Student architectural projects exhibition in Świnoujście
EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION SWINOUJSCIE - SPACE OF CYCLICAL CHANGE
The exhibition of several student projects made in the summer semester of 2022, at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University in Brno.
The projects are presented under the common title of Space of Cyclical Change, referring to one of the main characteristics of Świnoujście, especially its seaside district - cyclical change, about which you can read on the next page.
Almost all projects deal with a specific part of the city, seeking a new function for it and proposing a new way of developing it. One and only project looks at the city from a distant perspective, not only spatially but also in terms of time. This is the project Świnoujście 2+, which ironically, in an almost idyllic form, presents a more radical scenario for the development of the city, in particular the seaside district and Karsibór Island.
Other projects deal with the plot of the disused municipal swimming pool at the historical promenade, once a representative space of the bourgeoisie. A promenade of ladies and gentlemen in elegant clothes on a stroll with umbrellas. Later a space for families of workers and miners looking
for a bit of colour in the greyness of communism. Today, the Junkspace par excellence, representing the purest example of development on the entire Polish coast.
Learning from Bauman, we know that this past glory is our retrotopia. Our dream of the past, having little in common with the real one.
In the same way we know, this time from Koolhaas, that junkspace is like junk food - worthless and unhealthy, but which we devour as much as possible, and which in turn devours us. Without ever being satisfied, it creates in us a constant appetite for anything. To quote Koolhaas: junkspace exhausts and is itself exhausted.
Most projects try to face the junkspace of the promenade in their own way. Without taking offence at junkspace, commercialism, banality. Also, without taking offence at the commercial junkspace devouring almost the last fragments of the seaside nature - it hurts us, we would prefer not to do it, but we realise that we are probably not able to prevent it. Without emotion we look at the commercialisation of Świnoujście with a quasianthropological eye as an interesting phenomenon of destruction, which is after all not isolated. The same is happening on almost every kilometre of the Polish coast, in the Polish and Czech mountains. We humans simply want more, more, more...
The same applies to the functioning of a resort, which, in order to function, must be different from an ordinary town. Hence the fireworks of stimuli, sensations, consumption, flash and illusory
uniqueness. Like a circus, like a funfair, like a divine indulgence. Live life to the fullest for a fortnight and go back to living the precariat life. Who cares about authenticity, ecology, modern world problems, politics? Not now. Not here. Heaven can wait! - this is the spirit of the resort, its essence.
This is how it is and will be. You can´t argue with the spirit, you can´t question it, you can´t change its essence. This is also the approach of these projects. They react to the existing. Openly, without any rubbish but also without hostility.
You are welcome!

PROJECT THEME
The city of Świnoujście is an example of a space of cyclical change. The seasonal character of the
seaside health resort significantly affects the functioning of this space. For a few months of the year
the health resort becomes an overcrowded space of excess. Excess of impressions, expectations,
consumption. An excess of stimuli and an excess of OTHERS. For the rest of the year, this space
becomes a space of absence and forgetfulness. A space of emptiness. The project site itself is the last
free urban area in the most attractive part of the spa. There is the now defunct municipal swimming
pool. The aim of the work was to find a function that would respond to the aforementioned cyclical
change, and then to design a building where "commercial" and "social", "seasonal" and "year-round", "elite" and "egalitarian" would meet.
